Cottage Cheese Toppings

07/11/2014 by Julie Karla 2 Comments

I just love cottage cheese and the best snack I can think of is cottage cheese with one of my favorite toppings. I actually eat cottage cheese pretty much everyday and if I were to make a list of my favorite things to eat, cottage cheese would definitely be on that list!

I love to eat it in the morning, especially together with my fried egg and maybe a tomato salad on the side. A real morning protein boost. But I also put it in my salad for lunch. I especially like to make a spinach salad with avocado, toasted pumpkin seeds, tomatoes and lots and lots of cottage cheese.

One of my favorite cottage cheese toppings – Cashews, dried blueberries and goji berries.

Cottage cheese – either you love it or you don’t!

So, as you probably know by now, I’m just THE biggest fan of this fresh, creamy and lightly sour and salty cheese. But it’s also a cheese that divides people. There are those people who love it just as much as I do and then there are the ones who just hate it. Actually my husband Mikkel, belonged to that last group in the beginning but I soon changed that with my cottage cheese obsession!

In Denmark, you can buy these small cups of cottage cheese with different toppings. My favorite one being an edition with toasted hazelnuts, dried blueberries and cranberries. It’s perfect for when you are on the run and need something fast and quick that doesn’t include a high carb overload. But in the long run, it’s of course much better money-wise and more tasteful to make it yourself and so I do!

My three favorite cottage cheese toppings

These cottage cheese toppings might not be for everyone. First of all, you need to be a fan of cottage cheese and second you need to find the combination of the slightly salted cottage cheese and the sweet topping tasteful. I sure do but I imagine that for some it is a matter of getting used to it. Either way, I will encourage you to give it a try and hopefully, you will be just as fond of the combo, as I am.

Before we move on to the cottage cheese toppings, I just wanted to tell you about another favorite of mine. Cottage cheese with fresh mango and maybe some toasted pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds on the top. It is soooo good and the sweet mango together with the cottage cheese is a match made in heaven!

If you already know, you’re not into this whole sweet and salty cheese thing, I’ve also come up with a more salty topping for your cottage cheese snack. It’s basically just tomatoes, basil, toasted pumpkin seeds, olive oil and freshly ground pepper but the simplicity is definetely the force of the dish, especially if the ingredients are fresh and full of flavor,. There’s nothing better than juicy , and sweet organic tomatoes! This particular cottage cheese snack is one I like to eat in the moning as I mentioned earlier with of course my fried egg!
